We all know men and women are shaped differently. Considering the differences, you would expect office chairs to be just as suitable for women as for men. We were surprised to find that this was not the case.
The creation of Lei is based on extensive ergonomic research that aims to explore and understand the differences in men’s and women’s sitting styles. Together with Monica Förster we created an office chair made specifically for women. A chair tailored to the specific ergonomic requirements for female posture, making it feminine in terms of function and support, but classic in every other sense.
Every bolt. Every nut. Every detail. When we created Lei nothing was left to chance. Once the ergonomic specifications became clear from the research, it was evident that the design team would actually have to invent a number of technical solutions. The patented back supporting system LumbarFlex™, the removing of unsightly and awkward levers in favour of spherical knobs, as well as the simplicity in moving seatback and armrests - it all required a new take.
The patented LumbarFlex™ is a solution that allows a cushion in the back of the chair to follow the user’s forward movement and provide constant lumbar support.
Considering that women comprise such a huge part of the workforce, you would think that there would be many chairs specifically designed for women – since everyone knows that men and women are shaped differently – but this was not the case.
The armrests of Lei are fixed to the seatback,
which makes it easy to adjust the backrest height
simply by lifting the armrests.
Lei’s purposeful and elegant design is deeply confident and robust, without being overwhelming in any way. There is nothing superfluous about Lei – the levers that often protrude from the seat pans of normal office chairs have been transformed into minimalistic and easy-to-reach rounded knobs. On top of all the innovations needed to meet the specifications, we still had to incorporate other general requirements for materials that were light, durable and sustainable. No compromises were made in any aspect of creating Lei – it took a lot of work, but technically, functionally and design-wise, the chair is perfect.
- I wanted Lei’s form to be dictated by its functions, measurements and technical solutions, all of which are grounded in extensive ergonomic research focusing on what women need from an office chair, and how they sit differently than men. I’m quite proud of the fact that by helping to prevent some of the more common problems associated with sitting for extended periods of time, Lei promotes a healthier work environment for both women and men.
